AUGUSTA KIWANIS KICKS OFF KIWANIS WORLDWIDE SERVICE PROJECT

The Augusta Kiwanis Club recently joined a Kiwanis International service project designed to protect and save an estimated 61 million newborns and a number of young mothers world-wide from maternal and neonatal tetanus; UNICEF Ambassador and actor, Tea Leoni, delivered the announcement at the 95th Annual Kiwanis International Convention this past year.

Dr. Alice Savage, a former lieutenant governor of clubs in the Augusta division and the current Club chair of the Worldwide Service Project, told members that 160 babies die each day from tetanus.  She said the fund raising campaign labeled “Eliminate” would attempt to produce $110 million for the immunization of women and children in the world’s poorest regions.

Dr. Savage was also heavily involved in a successful $100 million global Kiwanis campaign to virtually eliminate iodine deficiency disorders in children.

During her presentation at the local club last year, she surprised four club members by presenting them Charter Zeller Fellowships for their one-time gift or two year pledge of $1,250 to the “Eliminate” project.  Recognized were former Kiwanis Governor of the New England District, Carolyn Perry; current Division lieutenant governor, Bob West; Kiwanis President, Kim Michaud; and Vice President, Linda Wohl.
