Thursday’s speaker Steven H. Levesque, executive director, Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority, outlined progress and plans for the redevelopment of the Brunswick Naval Air Station which closed last year.

He said the transition from a military base to a civilian facility is utilizing existing assets to attract new industrial development, including 8,000 foot runways, enormous hangers, and significant infrastructure and buildings. He said the presently vacant Navy Gateway Inn, constructed in 2004, represents the second largest hotel in Maine and could serve as an important meeting and conference facility.

Levesque reported that 16 business entities are now conducting business at the Brunswick Landing with several more in the works. The Brunswick Executive Airport which opened at the site last year features a near 1,000 acre aviation complex for manufacturing, general aviation services, research and development, and maintenance, repair and overhaul businesses.

A Brunswick International Fly-In is scheduled for June 2-3.

.WELCOME :

Jeff Chapman introduces the clubs newest member, Dr. Steve Zembroski

Earl H. Smith, Dean of Colby College Emeritus, described his new publication, The Dam Committee, at Thursday’s noon luncheon meeting.

Smith, who had previously published two history books, Mayflower Hill, A History of Colby College, and With the Help of Friends about  the Colby Art Museum, said his latest book was “a work of fiction because he tired of telling the truth.”  The Dam Committee in  which he disguises names and places features two local characters from a town not unlike Belgrade he thinly disguises as the Town of Belfrey.  They discover a murder and a suitcase full of money.  The book was two years in the making and is a humorous mystery that Smith said depicts a raw and raucous small town democracy.

As we approach our 90th anniversary, Milt Huntington will be giving us some weekly Kiwanis History.

DID YOU KNOW ??

The first clubs were organized to promote the exchange of business among the members. However the members were distributing Christmas baskets to the poor. A lively debate ensued between those who supported community service as the Kiwanis mission and those who supported the exchange of business. By 1919, the service advocates won the debate.
  • Kiwanis was founded in Detroit, Michigan, on January 21, 1915.
  • In the early years, Kiwanis clubs focused on business networking, but even then, members were serving the needs of the poor.
  • By 1919, the organization had changed its focus from business to service.
  • Kiwanis became an international organization in 1916 with the organization of the Kiwanis Club of Hamilton, Ontario.
  • Kiwanis limited its membership to the United States and Canada until 1962 when worldwide expansion was approved.
  • Until 1987, Kiwanis was a male-only organization. But after years of debate and growing support, women’s membership was received overwhelmingly.
