Dana Mosher, director of  Camp CaPella in Dedham, described the “special magic” of the camp for children with disabilities recently at Thursday’s luncheon meeting.

He said the non-profit and self-sustaining agency, supported by individuals, businesses and service organizations, provides quality of life experiences for children and adults with disabilities.  He delivered an animated and inspirational description of the programs which included swimming, boating, camp crafts, sports, nature study and special events.

Mosher told of receiving a phone call from Doris Buffet, the sister of billionaire Warren Buffet in July of 2009 when the camp was strapped with a heavy mortgage.  Her visit resulted in an interest and payment free mortgage which would be torn up in five years when the camp matches the Buffet donation.  He said the matching funds were raised and the camp now has a $90,000 camp improvement  fund

Maine State Museum Director Joseph R. Phillips described artifact preservation and flag restoration efforts at our Thursday noon luncheon.
In addition to displaying popular exhibits such as locomotives, vehicles, textiles and tourmalines, Phillips told of the Museum’s successful efforts to preserve and restore flags in the State House Hall of Flags, emphasizing that Maine was the first Northern state to preserve all Civil War flags.  The original flags are in the state Museum while those at the State House are replicas, he pointed out.  He praised the cooperative contributions of  Maine government, a federal grant and non-profit groups and individuals to raise nearly $400,000 for flag restoration efforts.

Publicity chair Milt appears to be telling a tale about a fish he caught in Moosehead.

Rank has its privileges. Lt. Gov. (that’s Lieutenant Governor) Bob West used his considerable influence Thursday to not only win the brunch certificate, but also the 50/50 loot during one of our more heavily attended meetings.

It was good to see a full room Thursday. Thanks
