A full room of Kiwanians, Key Clubers, Builders Clubs and K-Kids for our annual Youth Services Luncheon.

We set the day aside Thursday to recognize the accomplishments of our
sponsored youth organizations.
Invited to a Kiwanis luncheon were over 50 members of Kiwanis Key Clubs
from Cony, Hall-Dale, Monmouth and Richmond, and from Farrington Elementary
K-Kids, and Cony Middle School Builders Club.
Officers from, each of the youth groups told of community service
projects in which they had participated during the school year, involving
long hours of volunteer work at the Bread of Life Kitchen, Red Cross blood
bank, homes for the elderly and a number of other institutions. In
addition, they reported on charities benefitted as a result of various fund
raising activities.
Virgil Hammonds, superintendent of RSU 2, in which many of the youth
groups are located, praised them for their contributions and gave thanks to
the Kiwanis Club for its community service and support of schools.
He said, “You hear too often about the bad things kids do, but I don’t
see that. Kiwanis and the groups they sponsor perform community service,
not for recognition or rewards, but because it’s the right thing to do.”
It was also a day to welcome back the snow birds, Dr. Brint
Darlington, who just celebrated his 90th birthday, Dick Cummings, Dick
Barnes and Dale and Arlene Prescott.

Virgil Hammonds addresses the entire Kiwanis Family on Thursday.

Chuck Calligan, to his embarrassment, won the brunch certificate. Clayton Rollins happily accepted the cash from the 50/50 drawing.

Our Master of Ceremonies for the night will be

our own past President Charlie Kanozak

THE PAST PRESIDENTS’ CLUB

The Augusta Kiwanis Past Presidents’ Club, which boasts 39 living members, is strictly a social group of has-beens who meet once a year in the interest of “riotous behavior and gluttony” in the words of the late Club President Don Tavner, (1983). Another past president remarked: “It is the expressed desire of this distinguished group to do nothing–and then rest afterward.”

Minutes of their meetings are maintained, but sadly, are read in an atmosphere of total disinterest.

The group is arguably the only one of its kind in Kiwanis nation. It was founded in 1972 by 1963 President Bill Sprague with the understanding it would remain forever a social group, exerting no pressure on senior club officers. The past presidents, however, contribute annually as a group to the Kiwanis Scholarship Foundation.

The late John Hanson, senior club president in 1960, became the first president of the P.P. Club in 1972. There have been a total of 39 past presidents of the Past Presidents’ Club. The only requirement for admission to the group is survival after serving as President of the parent Augusta Kiwanis Club.

It’ll be interesting to see the number of past presidents who attend the Kiwanis 90th Anniversary night.

The backpacks provide these children with necessities for a few days as they adjust to their new environment as well as providing them with something that is theirs in a new space.

WHEN AUNT JEMIMA CAME TO TOWN

It was in the Spring of 1960 when the talented Aunt Jemima, attired in the familiar red and yellow-checked apron and red bandana, captivated the school children of Augusta and Hallowell.

Her school visitations and radio and television appearances kicked off the Annual Augusta Kiwanis Pancake Festival held at the Augusta State Armory. Nearly every Kiwanis member took part in the popular fund-raiser, promising “all the pancakes and sausage you can eat for $1.00.” The 1959 Kiwanis president, the late Richard Baron, accompanied her around to area schools where she performed songs like “It’s a Great Day,” “This Old Man,” and “Whole Wide World.” The iconic Aunt Jemima was a student of German, spoke fluent French and was a registered nurse.

Sadly, she was put out to pasture in a wave of political correctness. The pancake project couldn’t keep up with the overhead costs of grills, pancake mix and sausages, so it was cancelled in favor of other fund-raising events.

Kiwanians will long remember those days when the Armory was filled with men, women and children, their lines winding around the building, through the lobby and into the outside entranceway.

AUNT JEMIMA won’t be there June 9 for the ANNIVERSARY BASH. WE HOPE YOU WILL!!!

State Court Administrator James T. Glessner told Kiwanians Thursday of improvements in accessibility and safety at court houses throughout Maine.

Glessner said some $50 million is collected each year in Maine through fines and fees, none of which is retained by the court system but is deposited directly into the State’s general fund. He said the Governor and Legislature approved new funding this year to enable the court system to increase entry screening at 30 percent of the courts to about 50 percent. He told of several instances recently when court houses without proper screening experienced some frightening disruptions from spectators who had not passed through a screening process.

He told also of renovations in the works at the court house in Dover-Foxcroft and plans for a new Kennebec County Court House, which is scheduled to be opened in Augusta in two years. The new court house will feature a second story connector between the old building and the new.

Glessner also described a program for greater accessibility to the court system through a call center which can handle telephone inquiries in nearly 70 percent of the cases. Information can also be provided in 100 languages through an online interpreter program to avoid language barriers.

Thursday’s speaker Steven H. Levesque, executive director, Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority, outlined progress and plans for the redevelopment of the Brunswick Naval Air Station which closed last year.

He said the presently vacant Navy Gateway Inn, constructed in 2004, represents the second largest hotel in Maine and could serve as an important meeting and conference facility.

Levesque reported that 16 business entities are now conducting business at the Brunswick Landing with several more in the works. The Brunswick Executive Airport which opened at the site last year features a near 1,000 acre aviation complex for manufacturing, general aviation services, research and development, and maintenance, repair and overhaul businesses.

Earl H. Smith, Dean of Colby College Emeritus, described his new publication, The Dam Committee, at Thursday’s noon luncheon meeting.

Smith, who had previously published two history books, Mayflower Hill, A History of Colby College, and With the Help of Friends about the Colby Art Museum, said his latest book was “a work of fiction because he tired of telling the truth.” The Dam Committee in which he disguises names and places features two local characters from a town not unlike Belgrade he thinly disguises as the Town of Belfrey. They discover a murder and a suitcase full of money. The book was two years in the making and is a humorous mystery that Smith said depicts a raw and raucous small town democracy.

As we approach our 90th anniversary, Milt Huntington will be giving us some weekly Kiwanis History.

DID YOU KNOW ??

The first clubs were organized to promote the exchange of business among the members. However the members were distributing Christmas baskets to the poor. A lively debate ensued between those who supported community service as the Kiwanis mission and those who supported the exchange of business. By 1919, the service advocates won the debate.

Kiwanis was founded in Detroit, Michigan, on January 21, 1915.

In the early years, Kiwanis clubs focused on business networking, but even then, members were serving the needs of the poor.

By 1919, the organization had changed its focus from business to service.

Kiwanis became an international organization in 1916 with the organization of the Kiwanis Club of Hamilton, Ontario.

Kiwanis limited its membership to the United States and Canada until 1962 when worldwide expansion was approved.

Until 1987, Kiwanis was a male-only organization. But after years of debate and growing support, women’s membership was received overwhelmingly.

Lyn Duplessis, first vice president of Guide Dog Users of Maine, and Kim Michaud’s “younger” sister, described animal training procedures at Thursday’s luncheon meeting.

She explained how hand signals given her 10-year-old German Shepherd, Queeg, guided her around obstacles such as tree branches and sidewalk curbs. She said the dog had undergone year-long training so as not to be alarmed by dogs and cats, buses and automobiles, followed by a 30 day training program together. She said her initial challenge was to cross Augusta’s East-Side rotary safely and quickly. Miss Duplessis explained that the dog employs “intelligent disobedience” with a command if an unexpected danger occurs.

When her “partner” retires soon, she plans to keep him although a new one will be obtained.

.

Todd Presson, CEO of Patriot Renewables, LLC, Quincy, MA, told us Thursday of the economic and environmental benefits of their two wind power projects in Maine.

Speaking of facilities they own and operate at Spruce Mountain in Woodstock and at Beaver Ridge in Freedom, Presson said Maine is listed as 22nd in the nation among states with megawatts of wind-generated electricity installed. He said the current 397 megawatts produced now is expected to grow to 2000 MW by 1920. Nationally, 46,976 MW are generated now.

He addressed the common complaints about wind power generation, and claimed it was “a highly reliable source of energy that helps to reduce emissions from the burning of fossil fuels.” He admitted natural gas is a less expensive source of energy now, a situation he said could change over time. He pointed out that other sources of energy receive similar federal tax incentives as those of wind power. Asked about noise levels, he said their projects were surprisingly quiet, although some people feel they’re too loud while others do not. Offshore wind power, according to Presson, is three times more expensive to develop than facilities onshore.

HUGH HOLMES, 1969 KIWANIS PRESIDENT DIES

Hugh Holmes, president of the Kiwanis Club of Augusta in 1969, has died. Hugh was the only president to serve less than a year. Kiwanis International had changed the Kiwanis year during his term to have the year begin in October after Hugh had served for just nine months.

A lot of good things happened in those nine months, as Hugh packed in a load of achievements and racked up a ton of great memories during his abbreviated administration. High reminisced about his year as president at a recent meeting of the Past Presidents’ Club. He looked back fondly on the Pancake Festival at the Augusta State Armory when the guys behind the scenes in the kitchen were having the most fun of all, mixing the pancake batter. It was unclear why they were having such a good time, but the kitchen crew included Hap Gerrish, Bob Schoppe and Charlie LaPlante.

Hugh presided over the Club during a “huge-ly” successful Armory live auction and a profitable Rose Sale. He remembered his trip to the N.E, Kiwanis Convention in Boston with the likes of Nate Mitchell, Bill McCausland and Secretary Ed Poor. Another example of Kiwanis is fellowship Hugh recalled was the annual trip to Hope Lodge on a lake near Rockland where the Rockland club hosted a lobster bake. Hugh said wistfully: “Those were the good old days.”

Staying with a recent nauticul theme, Rich Hilsinger, director of Woodenboat School in Brooklin, ME. For the past 25 years, told members of the Club Thursday that the school was founded 32 years ago to preserve the art of wooden boat building.

He said between 700 and 800 students of all ages, backgrounds and experience levels are currently enrolled in programs there, ranging from seamanship to boatbuilding and woodworking to various related crafts. The average age of students is 50 with 75 percent of them men.

Connected with the school is Woodenboat Magazine, which according to Hilsinger, has grown from a newsletter to a magazine with 100,000 subscribers world-wide. He said the magazine would be digitalized in a few more weeks and can be seen online.

Hilsinger said more people are building wooden boats now than at any other time in history with wooden boat construction now including marine plywood and epoxy.
