It was our pleasure to have Dan Foster come and speak at Kiwanis this week. Dan has run his own insurance franchise since 2002, partnered with, “Farm Family Insurance”. Dan’s true passion, though, is the sport of ice hockey, which is what he came to speak about.
In Maine there is a hockey organization called, “The Skating Association of Maine” Here’s an excerpt from their website explaining what it is they do.
“The Skating Association of Maine (SAM) is an organization with over 300 members. SAM’s mission is to encourage and promote ice skating programs in the State of Maine. SAM’s purpose is to encourage and promote the participation, instruction, practice and advancement of its members in the sport of skating on ice, including, but not limited to Learn to Skate, Figure Skating, and Hockey, in accordance with the rules and regulations of each sport’s National Governing Body (NGB) and to instill the ideals of sportsmanship, honesty, and teamwork.”
Dan is one of the instructors in SAM, and has been participating helping children in the local area since 2011. The group was actually formed, in part, due to the collapse of the Kennebec Ice Arena in 2011. There are four groups of children that SAM instructs, these are:
- Mites (8 and under)
- Squirts (10 and under)
- Peewee (12 and under)
- Bantam (14 and under)
Dan has helped mentor and train many children in the love of hockey and athletics. He told us that hockey is one of the better sports for children, simply for the cost savings. It costs $450.00 for a full season. This may seem expensive, but compared to dance, or some of these other sports, it is significantly cheaper (Dance dresses can cost up to $1000.00). The other thing is what you get for your money. This $450.00 gets you 25 games. This is ridiculous value. Your children will be on the ice 3 times per week!
Get your kids out there and skating on the ice! SAMs website is: http://www.maineskaters.com
Kiwanis, in lieu of the incredible value of teaching these children the work ethic, and camaraderie of hockey, donated $3000.00 to the continuation of SAM and Dan’s work there! Below are some of the pictures of us presenting the check. This is a great help to the community and we know the money is in good hands.
