At our May 19, 2016 meeting, the club recognized the award recipients for the annual Distinguished Youth program:
Jennifer Jacobs, Nathan Delmar, Molly Silsby, John Ryan, Haley West, Ian Ferguson, Emma Begin, and Kim Mondonedo (Kiwanis President); not shown: Bryce Smith (Gardiner Area HS) and Julie Plummer (Richmond HS)
Kiwanis supported youth club counselors and teachers from nine area high schools nominate 3 to 4 students who have excelled in school and have participated in various community volunteer efforts. Kiwanians, lead by Program Co-ordinator Beth Crummett, then go to each school to interview the students and choose one for the award from each school.

Our guest speaker was Rev. James Weathersby of the Riverview Psychiatric Recovery Center in Augusta. The Riverview center (located on the grounds of the former Augusta Mental Health Institute – AMHI) assists patients toward recovery by providing support, treatment and care to persons with mental health issues, according to their web site. Rev. Weathersby called it a place of healing, intervention, and stabilization for persons in need. He noted that 1 in 5 of our population are affected by mental health issues either directly or indirectly by association with friends or family members. The latest statistics indicate veterans are one of the demographics most at risk and they have patients between the ages of 19 and 72, with 44 years of age as an average. Their goal is to have all their patients return to their homes and communities. His message to Riverview’s patients and their families is, “There is still hope,” no matter where you are right now.
