Julie Richard, Executive Director of the Maine Arts Commission presented an overview of the commission’s efforts to bring Arts to the Masses. The organization is over fifty years old and is made up of fifteen governor-appointed members. Their funding comes from both the National Endowment of the Arts (NEA) and the State of Maine.
The importance of arts in Maine is reflected by the 3,262 arts-related organizations in the state and the idea that 4% of Maine businesses are a part of this creative economy.
In addition to assisting in the promotion of art-related events, programs, shows, and community groups, Maine Arts provides of number of grants to organizations and individuals across the state in support of the arts and creative enterprises; in the recent fiscal year they provided $250,000 in 53 grants to organizations.
In other club activities, President Kim Mondonendo, relayed a thank-you from the YMCA for Kiwanis’ donation to their Strong Kids program. It was noted that Kim and Paul Michaud are attending the NE District conference.
